This series of illustrations is a personal project, not a commission. It is inspired by the concept of the femme fatale. These women are young, mysterious, beautiful and use their beauty, charm, and sensuality to seduce.
The femme fatale archetype exists in many cultures. Scylla, Aphrodite, Circe, Medea, Clytemnestra and Lesbia are mythological examples of women said to possess a supernatural power over men. Historical examples include Cleopatra and Messalina. In the Bible, Delilah, Jezebel and Salome were also femmes fatales. Munch and Gustav Klimt depicted them in their paintings, as did the Pre-Raphaelite painters. In the 20th century we have the exotic dancer and spy Mata Hari. Famous femmes fatales have also been portrayed frequently in Hollywood movies.
